The benefits of online learning has sky rocketed recently due to the need for organizations to adapt quickly to change. Online learning is becoming widely accepted in the training world. We are beyond just the typical “click and read” types of trainings. With the advancement of e-learning software, online trainings have the potential to be engaging and interactive. With many companies global, or having a higher percentage of remote workers, online training is extremely helpful to get knew knowledge to your employees. We are excited about this area of training because we have just begun to tap into it’s potential and understand the effectiveness it can bring to our field!

Trainees can access these online trainings at any time from remote sites through widely available web browsers. Online learning goes by many names which can be confusing such as e-learning, web based training, computer based training and virtual classrooms. But essentially, all of these terms refer to the same concept: online training.

Convenience is not the only benefit of online learning. The information information is generally stored at one location and delivered through the internet on demand. This means the employees can actually take the training at a time that works best with their schedule. This training is easily updated and can be accessed by a broad audience all over the world!

Typically organizations pay travel expenses to send trainees to conferences or to bring trainers to various locations to train. Web based training has become popular as it provides many economical advantages. Further, it is flexible where you may access it any time as needed.

The learners also appreciate this delivery of instruction as it empowers the employee to take control of the learning pace. In addition, training can be set up to promote information sharing between employees on how to apply the skills to the job. Experts in the organization can also be involved in the message board providing credible advice.

E-learning provides multiple opportunities for each individual to practice their new skills. This is a huge benefit, as traditional classrooms typically have time constraints and each practice opportunity has to be shared across a larger group. Many training professionals prefer online training when it is necessary to standardize a training across organizational locations.

Web based training is most appropriate when self-directed learning is appropriate or the preferred mode of instruction. Research has shown that there is not a significant difference between in-person training and online training. However it is still important to make sure to conduct a training needs assessment in order to understand learner’s attitudes and preferences in order to determine the benefits of online learning are right for your situation.
